Christmas 2006

Christmas 2006

Season's greetings to you all! Thanks to all of you who have already sent letters to us. It is nice to know that some people have a lot of spare time on their hands. It has been two years since my last confession our last newsletter and its been a time of transition for the Appleyards. You can find excessive detail about our exploits at http://appleyar.wordpress.com but here are the highlights.

Josephine turned 6 in January and celebrated it in style with half a dozen other princesses, She had a great year in kindergarten and started first grade this autumn/Fall. She continues to thoroughly enjoy school, excelling in her reading, and demonstrating an aptitude for the performing arts.

As shown on this year’s Christmas card, we had a wonderful Spring ski weekend at Mt Hood Timberline in May. This was courtesy of 2nd prize in a sweepstakes competition Richard entered- a first since he never usually wins anything of this sort. It was the first day of Spring skiing when, after the previous day’s white out conditions, they opened Palmer Glacier (the top of the mountain) under a clear, clear, blue sky.

June involved a daddy/daughter bonding trip to the other side of “The Pond”. We went to the family villa in Spain for some R&R. Josephine had a tremendous time building sand castle’s on the same beach her Dad used to at her age, and we caught the Moors and Christian’s festival in Moraira which involved lots of fancy dress and loud explosions. We also spent some time in the UK visiting Josephine’s cousin’s, Shevek, Tchianna and Tarron, and catching up with friends.

This year saw Richard and Jennifer’s 12th Wedding Anniversary and Richard’s 40th Birthday. The latter required 2 weeks worth of celebration including a large party, excessive drinking, extended recovery periods (can’t put it away like I did 20 years ago at university- Ed.). We also enjoyed a little of the World Cup Fever and some associated face painting of the English flag.

Richard has been “on sabbatical” for the year since his grant funding at OHSU came to and end, and despite much effort the planned replacement funding did not materialize. Searching for new and exciting opportunities has been a roller coaster ride of anticipation and frustration. There are some promising possibilities but nothing definite yet. Jennifer has been working on her Art Empire with the publication of the 2007 Shoeniverse Calendar, www.theshoeniversecollection.com, which has been selling fast. She also continues her bridal gown portraits, www.bridalgownportraits.com, as well as her illustration and graphic design work.

Our warmest regards and best wishes for 2007,

Jennifer & Josephine.
